Who provides care?

Independent, statutory and voluntary sector care providers

Last week, we consid= ered some of the issues involved in assessing the care needs of individuals and communities. This week, we will look at what happens once those care needs = have been assessed – what type of organisations are involved in actually providing the care?

We can divide care p= roviders into three main groups:

When you discussed definitions of different sectors, you probably discussed the funding of the= se organisations, how they are run, and perhaps issues like the size of the organisations and their typical activities.

Case Studies – care provisio= n

Your tutor will orga= nise you into small groups for this exercise. You should use the Flexible Learning Centre and Library, and be prepared to give a short presentation to the res= t of the class to outline your findings.

No 1 Wilma Mackay

Wilma is 87 years ol= d and lives in East Kilbride. Wilma has been c= ared for by her daughter, but recently suffered a mild stroke, causing paralysis= on her left side.

No 2 John Abedeyo

John is an African a= sylum seeker in his 30s. He was tortured in his home country and has mental health problems. He lives in Springburn.

No 3 = ; Shona Murray<= /span>

Shona is 17 years ol= d and lives in Paisley. Shona is a wheelchair = user with cerebral palsy and is about to leave school. She has a place at Edinburgh University to study psychology, an= d is keen to live independently.

No 4 = ; Asif Ali

Asif is a 74 year ol= d man with angina and chronic heart disease. He lives with his wife in a ground f= loor flat in Pollokshields. His wife has joint problems and is finding housework increasingly difficult. Their adult son, who lives in London, recently visited and is worried= about how they are managing.

No 5 = ; Mavis Brown

Mavis is 67 years ol= d and lives alone in Rutherglen. She has been diagnosed with motor neurone diseas= e.
