refers to the consciousness of an ‘experience’ or a

‘what is coffee like? Nagel (1974) argues that we can only describe t=

information about ‘coffee’ which we could gain from other sourc=

such as using a thermometer to test the temperature or looking to see if it=

milky or black. Nagel wrote a famous article on phenomenal consciousness

usually involves automatic processes – in fact, we often only notice =
them
when they go wrong, and we put the car keys in the fridge and pour orange j=
uice
on our cereal! These are explained by the use of automatic and controlled
cognitive processes – for example, when you first start learning to
drive, you must complete a lot of tiring controlled processes – check=
the
mirror, put the clutch down, change gear etc. Experienced drivers, however,=
may
feel that they do many of these things ‘automatically’ – =
and
may even feel that they have driven home on ‘autopilot’, without
being consciously aware of it! Young and Block argue that the fact that we
sometimes make mistakes during these processes, however, shows that
consciousness is involved – in the form of ‘monitoring
consciousness’.
