Lesson 1
Your tutor will organise you
into pairs for this task.
1.
Working in pairs, name
the following parts of the computer. Ask your tutor if there are any you are
unsure of:
NB.
This task could not be converted to a web page - see your tutor for a paper
copy!
Task 2
Close down the computer and
log on. You will need to log on individually, using your ID number from your
student card (e.g. 10012345) as the username. Your password is Stow followed by
the year of your birth, e.g. Stow1981.
When you log in for the
first time, you will need to choose your own password. This should be 8 letters
long and should have a capital letter and a number, e.g. Password1.

Passwords Passwords are an important
part of using a computer. Computers can be used to store personal information
– for example, bank account details – which should only be seen by certain
people. Your college password is important because your internet use is monitored. The college allow you to
use the internet for study purposes – e.g. researching an essay, or looking
at university websites. You are not allowed to play games, use instant
messenger or look at illegal or offensive material. If you are caught looking
at illegal or offensive material (e.g. pornography) on a college PC, you are
in breach of the college rules and may be removed from your course. Your computer username and
password belong to you and no one
else – you should treat them the same way as your PIN card from the bank. If
you let someone else use your username and password and they abuse them, you
are responsible. Make sure you log off
the PC each time you leave the lab so that no one else can access the
internet using your user name. |
Task 3
Working in your pairs again,
show each other how to do the following tasks. You should take it in turns and
both should do each task! Help each other out if you get stuck, or ask your
tutor.

Microsoft Word.
2.
Open My Computer and

Task 4
What might we use computers

them at college and how you might use them in a care-related job.
Work in your pairs or small
groups and come up with as many ideas as you can. Keep this sheet in a folder
as we will return to it in future weeks.
